At just 21, Surya Varshan from Madurai has made a name for himself with his direct-to-consumer (D2C) brand, Naked Nature. The brand offers a wide range of products, including bath essentials, skin and hair care, lip and eye care, tooth care, and baby care.

Beginning with a Bath Salt

Surya’s journey into entrepreneurship started in Class 12 when he created his first product, a hibiscus bath salt, in his own kitchen. Growing up in Thoothkudi, where salt is abundant, he experimented by mixing it with flowers to create a unique blend. However, his youth made it challenging for people to take him seriously, and convincing customers to buy his products wasn’t easy.

While studying for his BE in Engineering in Chennai, Surya dedicated his weekends to traveling to Madurai to grow his business. His persistence paid off when an ayurvedic doctor, impressed by a sample, placed a larger order. This first breakthrough boosted Surya’s confidence, prompting him to transfer to a college in Madurai to fully focus on his venture.

Teaching himself digital marketing through YouTube and online courses, Surya also hosted classes, earning around Rs 2.2 lakh, which he reinvested into Naked Nature. His dedication transformed the brand, which now offers 70 products, reached a turnover of Rs 56 lakh, and achieved a valuation of Rs 10 crore in FY 2021-22. By the following fiscal year, FY 2022-23, the brand’s valuation soared to Rs 30 crore, marking a significant milestone. However, Surya’s success goes beyond financial figures.

Naked Nature isn’t just another skincare brand; it’s rooted in a commitment to ethical and transparent skincare. Using desi-cow ghee as a primary ingredient, the brand’s products are designed to address skincare and haircare concerns without relying on hidden ingredients, chemicals, preservatives, or artificial colorings. This commitment to transparency inspired the name “Naked Nature,” reflecting a brand ethos free from flashy celebrity endorsements and misleading advertising.

Despite early obstacles, Surya’s unwavering belief in his brand and his readiness to navigate the digital landscape have propelled Naked Nature into a prominent position in the industry.
