New Delhi, July 25, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has achieved a historic political milestone by surpassing former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to become India’s second-longest serving Prime Minister in consecutive terms. As of Friday, Modi has completed 4,078 continuous days in office since his first swearing-in on May 26, 2014.
At 74, Modi is the first Prime Minister born in independent India and the longest-serving leader from a non-Congress party. He took oath for his third consecutive term in June 2024, solidifying his position as a dominant force in Indian politics.
Indira Gandhi, who served as Prime Minister for 4,077 uninterrupted days from January 24, 1966 to March 24, 1977, now stands third in terms of consecutive tenure. Her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, remains India’s longest-serving Prime Minister, having led the country for 16 years and 286 days from August 15, 1947 to May 27, 1964.
Modi’s rise to national leadership began with the BJP’s sweeping victory in the 2014 general elections, securing a majority with 272 seats. The party strengthened its position in 2019 with 303 seats. Though falling short of a majority in 2024, the BJP retained power with support from NDA allies.
Modi is the only non-Congress Prime Minister to serve two full terms and win three consecutive general elections as the leader of his party. Before becoming PM, he also held the distinction of being Gujarat’s longest-serving Chief Minister from 2001 to 2014.
This political milestone reinforces Modi’s enduring influence on India’s contemporary political landscape.
