Navi Mumbai Airport Nears Launch as AAI Releases Key Aerodrome Data
Navi Mumbai: The much-anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has moved closer to operational status with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) publishing a crucial Aeronautical Information Publication Supplement (AIPS). The airport is scheduled for a commercial launch in mid-May.
Key Regulatory Milestone Achieved
The AIPS document, listed as AIPS 46/2025 on the Aeronautical Information Management India website, provides essential aerodrome data required for obtaining an aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
An NMIAL official confirmed that the licensing process is underway, stating:
“This certification is necessary to ensure the airport complies with aviation safety and operational standards before commercial operations can begin.”
Airlines Gearing Up for NMIA Operations
With the airport nearing completion, several airlines have begun preparations to transition some of their operations:
- Air India is expected to conduct test flights in April before gradually shifting its domestic operations to NMIA.
- IndiGo, which successfully conducted a validation flight with an Airbus A320 in December, is likely to be among the first carriers to move to the new airport.
- Air India Express, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air are in discussions regarding their operational transition.
The shift of domestic flight operations will be carried out in phases to ensure a smooth transition from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to NMIA.
As Navi Mumbai prepares for its new aviation hub, the upcoming airport is expected to ease congestion at Mumbai Airport and boost connectivity for passengers across India and beyond.
