Pune, October 7, 2025: The inauguration of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIAL) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi tomorrow marks a historic moment not only for Mumbai but for the entire Western Maharashtra region, said Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol. He emphasized that the airport will create new opportunities for international connectivity, employment, and investment across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Kolhapur, Satara, and Solapur.

Mohol explained that Navi Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (NMIAL) was established as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to design, develop, construct, operate, maintain, and expand the greenfield international airport in Navi Mumbai. The project is being developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) and CIDCO. He added that the project aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a Developed India 2047 and that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s foresight played a key role in completing the project, which will benefit the entire state in multiple sectors.

“Pune residents will gain dual advantages from this airport. Since international flight slots at Mumbai airport are limited due to congestion, the new airport will increase the availability of international flights. Additionally, industries in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Baramati will now have access to a nearby, modern cargo hub for exports,” Mohol stated.

He further highlighted that the state-of-the-art cargo terminal at the airport can handle around 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo annually, benefiting automobile, electronics, pharmaceutical, and agri-processing industries in the Pune district by easing exports.

Due to its proximity to Thane, Bhiwandi, and JNPT Port, and connectivity via the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, Pune will be reachable within 2.5 to 3 hours from the airport. This will reduce air cargo transit time and lower export costs, Mohol added.

Mohol also said, “Mumbai’s natural expansion is now heading toward Pune. The airport will accelerate the development of a new industrial corridor between the Pune and Mumbai metropolitan regions. Built as one of the most advanced and sustainable airports in India, it features 47 MW solar power generation, rainwater harvesting, and electric vehicle use, making it a true ‘Green Airport.’”

He emphasized that the project symbolizes Maharashtra’s commitment to sustainable development and serves as an ideal model of eco-friendly growth for Pune. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to make air travel affordable and accessible for all citizens under the Udaan scheme is being realized through projects like this. The Navi Mumbai International Airport is not just an airport—it is the gateway to India’s new economic horizon,” Mohol stated.

Global Gateway to Growth

Mohol described the new airport as a “Global Gateway to Growth” for people in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and surrounding areas, adding that it will open global opportunities for industries, tourism, and citizens of the region. “Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, Maharashtra is set to reach new heights of development,” he said.

Regional Industrial and IT Boost

The Talegaon and Chakan regions, home to several multinational manufacturing and automobile companies, and the Hinjewadi–Marunji IT belt with prominent tech firms, will greatly benefit from the airport.
Additionally, the new facility is expected to bring strategic importance and growth to Punawale, Kiwale, and Gahunje areas in Pimpri-Chinchwad.
