Navratri 2025: Tuljabhavani’s ‘Manchaki Nidra’ Begins Today Ahead of Sharadiya Navratri
The revered goddess of Maharashtra, Shri Tuljabhavani, will enter her sacred ‘Manchaki Nidra’ (ritual slumber) from today, September 14. The ceremony will commence after the Panchamrit Abhishek in the evening at the Tuljapur temple, one of the renowned Sade Teen Shaktipeeths of Maharashtra.
This ritual sleep will continue until September 22, 2025, when the Sharadiya Navratri festival begins with the traditional Ghatasthapana at the temple.
Significance of Tuljabhavani’s Manchaki Nidra
The Manchaki Nidra, also referred to as Ghor Nidra, holds deep mythological importance. Scriptures mention that before her legendary battle against the demon Mahishasura, the goddess went into a state of profound slumber. After awakening, she fought Mahishasura for nine days, ultimately slaying him on the tenth day, celebrated as Vijayadashami (Dussehra).
On Vijayadashami, a special ritual called Simollanghan is performed, where the goddess is taken in a palanquin procession around the temple. After this, she is placed back into another sacred rest known as Shramnidra, which lasts for five days. During this period, devotees abstain from initiating any auspicious activities, and even items like beds, mattresses, and pillows are considered inauspicious.
Navratri Celebrations 2025
This year, Sharadiya Navratri begins on September 22 (Monday). Across Maharashtra and especially at major Shaktipeeths like Tuljapur, thousands of devotees will gather to worship the goddess. The festival is marked by Ghatasthapana, daily prayers, cultural rituals, and immense devotion, culminating with the grand Vijayadashami celebrations.
Hindus across India observe two major Navratris annually – Chaitra Navratri and Sharadiya Navratri, both celebrated with devotion, rituals, and massive participation of devotees.
