NEET PG 2025 to Be Held in Single Shift on June 15: Supreme Court Ensures Fairness for Aspirants
In a major decision impacting lakhs of medical aspirants, the Supreme Court has directed the National Board of Examinations (NBE) to conduct NEET PG 2025 in a single shift on June 15. This move aims to maintain fairness and transparency in the examination process and avoid the controversies faced last year.
The apex court, during a hearing on Thursday, emphasized that conducting NEET PG in two shifts would be unfair, as it is impossible to ensure that both question papers are of the same difficulty level. “Conducting the exam in two shifts results in arbitrariness and fails to ensure a level playing field,” the court noted.
Responding to NBE’s claim of insufficient exam centres to host a single-shift test, the bench firmly disagreed. “We are not ready to accept that, in a country of this scale and with the technological advancements available, the examining body could not find sufficient centres,” the judges remarked. With over two weeks remaining, the court expressed confidence that logistical arrangements could still be made.
Why a Single Shift Matters
The Supreme Court’s order follows widespread criticism of NEET PG 2024, which was conducted in two shifts. Many candidates alleged discrepancies between their scores and the official answer keys, blaming flawed normalisation. The process of normalisation attempts to adjust scores across different shifts, but critics argue it lacks accuracy in high-stakes exams.
Medical aspirants and advocacy groups like the United Doctors’ Front filed petitions demanding a single-shift format for NEET PG 2025, citing transparency and fairness. Their concerns have now been acknowledged by the judiciary.
A Step Towards Restoring Trust
The Supreme Court’s intervention aims to restore trust in the NEET PG exam process. By mandating a single-shift examination, it ensures all candidates are assessed on a uniform scale, eliminating disparities caused by varying question paper difficulty.
NEET PG 2025 will now be held in a single session on June 15, marking a crucial step towards upholding fairness, transparency, and aspirants’ confidence in the examination system.
