New Nagpur Smart City to Rise on 1,710 Acres, Promises Jobs and World-Class Infrastructure
Maharashtra government approves futuristic business hub with state-of-the-art technology and integrated urban design
Nagpur is set to witness a transformative development with the creation of New Nagpur, a modern smart city envisioned to rival Mumbai as a business and financial hub. Approved by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the project will be developed across 1,710 acres of land at Godhani and Ladgaon in Hingna taluka, under the jurisdiction of the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA).
An agreement has been signed between NMRDA, HUDCO, and NBCC to execute the ambitious plan. HUDCO will provide funding worth ₹11,300 crore, of which ₹6,500 crore will go towards the New Nagpur project and ₹4,800 crore for the construction of the 148 km Nagpur Outer Ring Road. NBCC has been appointed as the project management consultant.

Features of the New Nagpur Smart City
The upcoming city is designed as a futuristic, technology-driven hub. Key highlights include:
- Underground Utility Tunnel System: For the first time in the region, a plug-and-play underground system will provide district cooling, automated waste management, uninterrupted power, water, gas, and telecom connectivity. Built excavation-free, it is designed to be future-proof.
- International Business and Financial Centre (IBFC): A hub for startups, MSMEs, IT and technology companies, and global service providers, aimed at driving investments and innovation.
- Employment Generation: The large-scale development is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs in technology, finance, and allied services.
- Sustainable Urban Design: The city will feature green corridors, high-capacity roads, and eco-friendly planning to support balanced growth.
- Integrated Governance Model: With robust infrastructure and policy support, New Nagpur is expected to emerge as a magnet for both domestic and international investors.
Development of Zero Mile Heritage
As part of Nagpur’s cultural revitalisation, the historic Zero Mile Stone, considered the geographical center of Akhand Bharat, will also be redeveloped. The state government has sanctioned a ₹45 crore project to create an experience center showcasing Nagpur’s central role in history. Plans include a museum, a performance gallery, and an Academy of Performance Art at Orange City Street. A 1.2 lakh sq. ft. auditorium will be built as part of the 6.2 lakh sq. ft. development, with modern facilities designed to attract both tourists and artists.
Relocation of Central Jail
In another major urban planning move, Nagpur Central Jail will be shifted outside the city to an 81.6-acre site near Babulkheda in Kamthi taluka. Designed with inputs from architects of modern jails in Palghar, Taloda, and Delhi, the relocation will free up valuable land within the city and improve correctional infrastructure.
A Vision for the Future
The New Nagpur project reflects Maharashtra’s intent to create a next-generation city that blends business, technology, heritage, and sustainability. With its underground civic infrastructure, smart governance, and global investment potential, the project is expected to transform Nagpur into one of India’s most advanced urban centers while generating wide-scale employment opportunities.
