New Update: Mandatory Aadhaar Biometric Update Now Free for Children Aged 5 to 17 Years
UIDAI waives all charges for biometric updates, benefiting 6 crore children nationwide and easing access to essential services.
In a major relief for parents, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced that Aadhaar biometric updates for children aged 5 to 17 years will now be completely free of cost. This decision, effective from October 1, 2025, will remain in force for one year, benefiting an estimated 6 crore children across the country.
Under UIDAI rules, every child must undergo two mandatory biometric updates—known as Mandatory Biometric Update 1 (MBU-1) at age 5 to 7, and Mandatory Biometric Update 2 (MBU-2) at age 15 to 17—to ensure accuracy in their Aadhaar data as they grow. Until now, each update attracted a service fee of ₹125. With the latest decision, all such updates within the 5–17 age group will be free, providing significant financial and administrative relief to families.
UIDAI clarified that fingerprints and iris scans are not captured for children below five years, as their biometric features are still developing. Once a child turns five, their fingerprints, iris, and photo must be updated to activate their Aadhaar for various essential uses.
This move will simplify access to key services such as:
- School admissions
- Entrance exam registrations
- Scholarships and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes
Parents and guardians are encouraged to update their children’s Aadhaar biometrics promptly to avoid disruptions in education, benefits, or documentation processes.
UIDAI has also postponed the implementation of new Aadhaar service charges until next year, reaffirming its commitment to ease of access, affordability, and inclusivity in digital identity services.
