Bank freezes account; Income Tax Department launches probe into mysterious mega transaction

In a bizarre and unprecedented banking twist, a 20-year-old man from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, was stunned to discover an astronomical balance in his late mother’s Kotak Mahindra Bank savings account: a staggering ₹10,01,35,60,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,23,56,00,00,00,00,299 — a 37-digit figure that equates to over ₹1 undecillion, a number so large it’s rarely encountered even in global finance.

The surreal discovery was made on the night of August 3, when Deepak, the son of the deceased account holder Gayatri Devi, received a credit alert showing a deposit of ₹1.13 lakh crore. Bewildered, he shared the message with friends, asking them to help count the zeros.

On visiting the bank the next morning, Deepak was informed that the transaction had indeed occurred, but the account was immediately frozen. The Income Tax Department was notified and has now taken over the case to determine whether the entry was a technical glitch, manual error, or linked to suspicious activity such as money laundering.

Sachin Gupta, who first tweeted about the incident, wrote:

“My math is a bit weak. The rest of you can do the multiplication and division. Currently, the Income Tax Department is investigating. The bank account has been frozen.”

As the news spread, Deepak’s phone was flooded with calls from friends, relatives, and curious strangers. Overwhelmed by the sudden attention, he reportedly turned off his phone.

Authorities remain tight-lipped about the ongoing investigation, stating that the origin of the deposit will be confirmed only after a detailed inquiry. Meanwhile, social media is buzzing with speculation, disbelief, and humorous commentary. One user remarked, “He’s now richer than Ambani!” while others dismissed it as a banking software bug.

Regardless of the cause, this incident raises serious questions about banking safeguards and digital transaction integrity, especially when even a seemingly dormant account can become the center of a financial mystery.

Statement from Kotak Mahindra Bank

“Media reports suggesting an unusually large balance in a customer’s account are incorrect. In light of these reports, we encourage customers to check their account details using Kotak’s mobile banking app or net banking platforms. Kotak Mahindra Bank confirms that our systems are functioning normally, with all services secure and fully operational.”
