Raigad, June 25 — A late-night road trip turned tragic after a speeding car rammed into a stationary trailer on the Mumbai-Goa highway near Khamb village in Maharashtra’s Raigad district. The accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday and claimed the life of one passenger while seriously injuring three others.

The vehicle, carrying four friends returning to Kalyan from Chiplun, collided with a parked trailer near an HP petrol pump. Preliminary investigation suggests the driver, Siddhesh Yogesh Shinde (26), may have dozed off at the wheel. The car, bearing registration number MH 05 EA 2505, reportedly struck the trailer (MH 46 BU 4014) at high speed.

Aditya Deepu Verma (38), a Thane resident, died on the spot. His co-passengers — Nilesh Radhani (25), Amit Vijay Karpe, and Shinde — sustained critical injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital by local rescue teams.

The Kolad police, under Inspector Nitin Mohite and Officer Posai Gaikwad, have booked Shinde under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Motor Vehicles Act for rash and negligent driving. The FIR was lodged by Amit Karpe, one of the injured.

Authorities believe low visibility due to monsoon conditions and driver fatigue were key factors in the crash. They also raised concerns about the growing menace of illegally parked vehicles along the highway, especially near fuel stations — the trailer involved was reportedly parked opposite such a location.

The incident has once again spotlighted the urgent need for stricter highway monitoring and enforcement to prevent similar tragedies.
