Online Romance Gone Wrong: Woman Convinces Men to Cover ₹61,000 in Expenses
Lawyer and activist Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj on X exposed such scams and their modus operandi.
Dating app scams have surged in India recently, with people creating fake profiles while some individuals lure another person into expensive traps, exploiting their emotions and trust.
Similarly, the latest example of a real scam, which has left several men out of pocket and deeply embarrassed, has come to light.
Lawyer and activist Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj on X shared about one such scam that has already claimed 12 victims. It further revealed how a Mumbai-based restaurant has been a part of the scheme. According to the post, the scam begins on popular dating apps Tinder and Bumble.
“MUMBAI DATING SCAM EXPOSE. THE GODFATHER CLUB ANDHERI WEST. BRAZEN SCAMMING EVERYDAY. 12 victims in touch. The trap laid through Tinder and Bumble. Bill amounts 23K- 61K. 3 men trapped by the same girl,” she wrote.
Exposing the Mumbai dating scam at the restaurant, she added that 12 victims are in touch while three men have been trapped by the same girl.
In the following tweets, Bhardwaj explained how the scam works. Beginning with connecting on the dating app, the individuals are pushed for quick meetings at certain venues, specifically The Godfather.
“Dating app connect. Push for a quick meet. Meeting place Pizza Express or Metro. Then insists Godfather. Orders drink, hookah, and fire shot. The guy isn’t shown a menu card. Bill in thousands within an hour. She absconds. Bouncers corner guy to beat if not paid.”
After meeting, the women intentionally order expensive items that are not on the menu, spend some time with the dates, and abruptly leave. However, the worst comes later, as the men are left with nothing but bills of up to Rs 23,000 to Rs 61,000. Bhardwaj even shared pictures of the restaurant bills in her post.
When the men protest or refuse to pay, they are reportedly threatened by the club’s staff or bouncers, forcing them to settle the bill out of fear and humiliation.
Mentioning that many people have posted about their ordeals about the alleged scam, Bhardwaj also stated that the Mumbai Police is yet to take any action.
The Godfather Club, located in Andheri West, has come under scrutiny following Bhardwaj’s post that went viral on social media. Apart from this, several other places are under the radar.
Bhardwaj’s post hints at a broader network of nightclubs across Mumbai engaging in similar practices. These establishments allegedly employ PR personnel who hire women to bait men on dating apps, luring them into expensive and intimidating situations.
It is pertinent to note that similar incidents across major cities like Delhi, Gurugram, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, among others have also been reported.
This post has sparked outrage and intense discussions among netizens on the social media platform.
