IMD issues orange alert for Pune; thundersqualls and strong winds forecast across Konkan, Goa, Gujarat, and parts of interior Maharashtra till May 25.

Maharashtra, particularly its Konkan belt, is expected to receive heavy rainfall over the next few days as a developing weather system over the east-central Arabian Sea intensifies, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday.

According to the IMD, an upper air cyclonic circulation currently hovering over the region off the north Karnataka-Goa coasts is likely to evolve into a low-pressure area by Thursday, and further intensify into a depression by Friday as it tracks northward.

“While a low-pressure system may form over the Arabian Sea, its major impact is expected over north Konkan, with limited effect over interior Maharashtra,” an IMD official stated, adding that the situation is being closely monitored.

The department has forecast widespread light to moderate rainfall, coupled with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds between May 21 and 25 for Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada. Wind speeds are likely to range from 40 to 50 kmph.

Severe weather conditions are expected to peak between May 21 and 23 over Konkan, Goa, Gujarat, and Madhya Maharashtra, with thundersqualls reaching 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph in isolated pockets.

In Pune, an orange alert has been issued for the next two days. The city is likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds (40-50 kmph), and moderate to heavy rainfall.

“Thundershowers are likely in Pune on Thursday and Friday. The intensity may drop over the weekend, though isolated heavy spells cannot be ruled out,” the official added.

The IMD has also sounded a warning for ghat sections in Pune, Kolhapur, and Satara, cautioning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and winds up to 60 kmph in localized areas.
