Outrage Over Mumbai's Expensive Housing: Social Media Reacts to ₹45,000 Rent for 1-Bedroom Apartment.
In yet another case of Mumbai’s rising rapidly rental prices, a one-bedroom apartment in the Matunga East area has gone viral, sparking renewed discussions about the high cost of living in India’s financial hub.
A post about this flat on X has ignited conversations similar to the recent outrage over a washing machine awkwardly placed above a toilet in another small Mumbai apartment. The apartment, described as having an “old vibe,” includes a tiny living room, bedroom, and kitchen, along with a staircase that leads to a loft for extra storage.
However, the asking rent of ₹ 45,000 has led to significant backlash online. The post humorously stated, “They are renting out an old chawl for ₹ 45,000, calling it ‘old school’ or ‘old vibes.’ Capitalism has commodified poverty to a whole new level.” One user on X remarked, “45k for a common toilet shared by 200 others? Errr.”
Second user wrote Phir hera pheri shooting location. Mere paali pe kapda nahi sukhane ka.
One person commented, “This looks worse than some government college hostels, to be honest.” Another added, “Mumbai never fails to disgust,” while a third mentioned, “My first apartment in the US was cheaper…” Users on Instagram also expressed their disbelief, with Another joked, “The rent should be 1 crore,” mocking the high prices for basic housing in the city.
Chawls are a type of residential building or tenement found mainly in Mumbai, India. They typically consist of several small rooms or apartments sharing a common veranda or balcony. Chawls have a unique community feel, with residents often forming close-knit bonds due to the shared living spaces and common facilities.
