Over 18,600 Pune Homes Generate 91 MW under Prime Minister’s “Suryaghar” Free Solar Power Scheme
Pune, September 25, 2025: To combat rising electricity bills due to air conditioning in hot summer months, 18,694 Pune households have opted to install rooftop solar projects under the Prime Minister’s Suryaghar Scheme, effectively reducing their electricity bills to zero. These households have collectively received ₹151 crore in government subsidies, and the scheme has so far generated 90.62 megawatts of clean energy.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Suryaghar Scheme aims to make domestic electricity consumers self-reliant and free from monthly electricity bills. Across India, the scheme has enabled a generation capacity of 5,889 MW, while in Maharashtra, 291,811 homes have adopted the system, generating 1,100 MW.
In the Pune region, registrations for the scheme have reached 31,649 households, of which 18,694 projects are operational, generating 90.62 MW, and 7,397 projects are in the final stages of implementation.
Operational breakdown by Mahavitaran zones:
Ganeshkhind Division: 7,312 projects (38.21 MW), ₹62.4 crore subsidy to 6,356 beneficiaries
Pune Rural Division: 5,146 projects (21.07 MW), ₹36.4 crore subsidy to 4,480 beneficiaries
Rasta Peth Division: 6,236 projects (31.34 MW), ₹52.58 crore subsidy to 5,350 beneficiaries
Subsidy Details
For households consuming up to 300 units per month, a 3 kW Suryaghar project suffices, generating 300–360 units monthly. Subsidies are:
₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW
₹78,000 for a 3 kW system
Housing societies can receive ₹18,000 per kW for projects up to 500 kW.
Affordable Loans Available
For households unable to fund the projects upfront, the Jansamarth portal allows registration and loan applications after signing up on Mahavitaran’s [iSmart portal](https://www.mahadiscom.in/ismart/). Accredited banks provide up to 90% of project cost at rates lower than home loans.
Sunil Kakade, Chief Engineer, Mahavitaran Pune Circle, urged Pune residents to register early and take advantage of the scheme, noting that Mahavitaran provides free meters for Suryaghar installations and the subsidy is disbursed quickly.
