‘PAN PAN PAN’: IndiGo Pilot Issues Mid-Air Alert Before Emergency Landing in Mumbai Due to Engine Failure

IndiGo Halts Kathmandu Flights Amid Nepal Unrest, Waives Fees For Affected Passengers
Mumbai, 17 July 2025: A Delhi-to-Goa IndiGo flight made an emergency landing in Mumbai on Wednesday evening after encountering a technical issue mid-air. The pilot of flight 6E 6271 declared a ‘PAN PAN PAN’ — an internationally recognized radio call signaling an urgent but non-life-threatening situation — before safely landing the aircraft.
The Airbus A320neo, carrying 191 passengers and crew, departed from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport en route to Goa’s Manohar International Airport. However, around 100 nautical miles north of Bhubaneswar, a malfunction was detected in engine number 1, prompting the crew to request a diversion.
“The pilot declared ‘PAN PAN PAN’ due to a malfunction in the aircraft’s engine,” an airport official told Hindustan Times on condition of anonymity.
At 9:32 pm, the crew requested emergency support at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. In line with standard procedure, fire tenders and ambulances were placed on standby as the aircraft approached. The flight landed safely at 9:53 pm — slightly ahead of its scheduled arrival time.
IndiGo later confirmed the incident, stating: “A technical snag was detected on flight 6E 6271 while flying from Delhi to Goa on July 16, 2025. Following standard protocols, the aircraft was diverted to Mumbai where it landed safely.”
All passengers and crew members were unharmed. The aircraft has been grounded for inspection and maintenance. IndiGo is arranging an alternate aircraft to transport the affected passengers to Goa.
These recurring technical glitches have raised concerns among passengers and aviation authorities, with increased focus now on safety checks and aircraft maintenance protocols.
