The reason lies in how different foods take different amounts of time to pass through the digestive system. Digestion is the body’s natural process of breaking down food and drinks into smaller molecules so nutrients can be absorbed efficiently. Experts believe that knowing how long various foods stay in the system can help in meal planning, weight management, and maintaining steady energy levels.

Doctors explain that food usually spends about four hours in the stomach before moving into the small intestine, which marks the first stage of digestion. From there, it may take six to twelve hours, sometimes longer, to pass into the large intestine. Overall, food can take anywhere between twelve and forty-eight hours to fully travel through the digestive system. However, the exact duration depends heavily on the type of food eaten.

Liquids digest much faster than solid food. Drinking water on an empty stomach passes almost instantly to the intestines. Fresh fruit and vegetable juices usually take only 15–20 minutes to digest.

Fruits

Fruits generally have high water content and digest quickly. Watermelon takes around 20 minutes, while melons, oranges, and grapes take about 30 minutes. Apples and pears also take about 30 minutes, and slightly denser fruits like peaches and cherries require close to 40 minutes.

Vegetables

Vegetables vary depending on whether they are eaten raw or cooked. Raw salads, tomatoes, and capsicum take about 30–40 minutes, while carrots and beetroot need around 50 minutes. Heavier vegetables like corn and potatoes may take about an hour to digest.

Grains and Cereals

Whole grains and cereals take longer compared to fruits and vegetables. Brown rice, millet, oats, and corn flour all take about 90 minutes to digest.

Pulses and Beans

Lentils, chickpeas, peas, lima beans, and kidney beans take around 90 minutes, while soybeans are heavier and may require up to 2 hours.

Seeds and Dry Fruits

Sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame, almonds, peanuts, and cashews take about 2 hours to digest. Walnuts and Brazil nuts are denser and may take 2.5 to 3 hours.

Milk and Paneer

Dairy digestion depends on fat content. Skimmed milk and low-fat paneer take about 90 minutes, paneer made from whole milk needs around 2 hours, while solid paneer from whole milk can take 4–5 hours.

Animal Protein

Animal-based proteins take the longest to break down. An egg yolk or low-fat fish may be digested in just 30 minutes, while a whole egg or fatty fish needs about 45 minutes. Chicken takes 1.5 to 2 hours, turkey 2 to 2.5 hours, lamb 3 to 4 hours, and pork is the slowest, taking 4.5 to 5 hours.

Men, Women, Children, and the Elderly: Different Digestion Speeds

Digestion also differs based on age and gender. Men, with greater muscle mass and higher metabolism, usually digest food faster. Women may experience slower digestion due to hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. Children digest food more quickly than adults because their metabolism is higher and their digestive system is smaller, which also explains their frequent hunger. Elderly people, however, experience slower digestion as muscle strength decreases and enzyme activity reduces. Medications and reduced physical activity further add to this slowdown.

Digestion is not the same for everyone, nor is it the same for every food. From quick-digesting fruits to heavy proteins like pork or paneer, the time food spends in the body varies widely. Being mindful of these differences can help you plan meals better and support overall health.
