A passenger on an Air India Express flight from Bengaluru to Varanasi sparked a major security scare on Monday after attempting to open the cockpit door, allegedly mistaking it for the lavatory.

According to airline sources, the cockpit remained secure due to its passcode-controlled locking system. The flyer reportedly tried entering a passcode to unlock the door but failed. He was immediately intercepted by cabin crew and handed over to security officials at Varanasi airport along with eight co-travelers.

While the passenger claimed it was an accident, the airline is treating the incident seriously. Attempting to access the cockpit is considered a severe violation of aviation safety and security norms. The airline is expected to initiate strict action, including placing the flyer on the no-fly list and pursuing legal proceedings.

An Air India Express spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating, “We reaffirm that robust safety and security protocols are in place and were not compromised. The matter was reported to the authorities and is under investigation.”

Sources further indicated that the airline may classify the case as a Level 3 offence under the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) guidelines for unruly passengers. Level 3, the most serious category, covers life-threatening actions and cockpit breach attempts. If confirmed, the passenger could face a minimum two-year flying ban with no upper time limit.

As per DGCA rules, the case will now be reviewed by the airline’s internal committee, which includes a retired judge, industry representative, and consumer rights member. The committee has 30 days to decide the severity and duration of the flying ban.

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of strict vigilance and enforcement of aviation safety protocols.
