In a heartfelt gesture of remorse, social media personality and Bigg Boss OTT 3 contestant Payal Malik publicly sought forgiveness at a Kali temple in Patiala after a video of her portraying Goddess Kali drew widespread criticism for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
The emotional visit took place on Tuesday, July 22, where Payal, overwhelmed by the situation, broke down in front of devotees. With folded hands and tearful eyes, she begged for understanding and atonement, saying, “I’m willing to accept whatever punishment is decided for me.” She was accompanied by her husband, popular YouTuber Armaan Malik, and their daughter Tuba, as the family came together to express regret by taking part in temple seva — cleaning utensils and distributing food as a mark of repentance.
The controversy stemmed from a video recorded three months ago in which Payal dressed as Goddess Mahakali, complete with symbolic elements like the Trishul (trident) and crown. Despite being taken down shortly after its release, the video continued to circulate on other pages that had saved and reshared it, reigniting public outrage.
Speaking to the media during her temple visit, Payal clarified the intent behind the video, stating, “The video was never intended to offend anyone. My daughter has a deep devotion to Kali Maa, and I believed that recreating the look would be meaningful for her. But I now realize it was a significant error in judgment. I sincerely apologise from the bottom of my heart and truly hope others don’t make the same mistake.”
She further explained that as soon as she noticed negative comments online, she deleted the video herself. However, third-party pages had already saved the footage and have since been sharing it without context. “I saw the responses, realized how serious the mistake was, and took it down right away. Unfortunately, by then it had already been shared by others who are now re-uploading it” she added.
Payal and Armaan Malik are no strangers to the spotlight. Known for their unconventional family dynamics — Armaan is married to both Payal and her close friend Kritika Malik — the couple has amassed a massive following online. The trio, who appeared together on Bigg Boss OTT 3, share four children: Chirayu, Tuba, Ayan, and Zaid.
