The landscape of digital payments in India has taken a significant leap forward with the introduction of UPI Lite, allowing users to make payments without entering a PIN. Effective from November 1, this feature, launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), enhances the user experience for those utilizing popular payment platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm.

UPI Lite, designed specifically for small transactions, eliminates the need for a PIN or password, making it easier and faster for users to complete their payments. This move aligns with India’s growing preference for UPI as the most favored payment method. In a bid to streamline the process, NPCI has also introduced an auto top-up feature, enabling users to recharge their UPI Lite wallets automatically when the balance runs low. Previously, users had to manually recharge their wallets, which often proved to be a hassle.

As of now, UPI Lite transactions are limited to ₹500 per transaction, with a maximum wallet balance of ₹2,000 and a daily spending limit of ₹4,000. However, under the new rules, proposed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the transaction limit will increase to ₹1,000, and the wallet balance limit will rise to ₹5,000. This adjustment caters to users who frequently make small payments, providing them with more flexibility in managing their funds.

The auto top-up feature allows users to maintain their UPI Lite balance without manual intervention. As soon as the balance is low, it will be automatically replenished from the user’s linked bank account. However, users should note that there is a limit on how often they can top up their accounts, with a maximum of five transactions allowed per day, totaling ₹10,000. This new convenience is part of NPCI’s ongoing efforts to enhance the UPI Lite experience.

Enabling UPI Lite in apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm is a straightforward process. Users can simply open the app, tap on the profile picture icon and look for the option labeled “PIN-free UPI Lite.” Following the on-screen instructions will allow them to activate this new payment service with ease.
