Pimpri, August 26, 2025 – Preparations for Ganeshotsav are in full swing, and traditional immersion ceremonies are expected to draw large crowds to riverbanks, lakes, and artificial immersion tanks across the city. However, officials have raised concerns about the pollution caused when plastic bags, thermocol, decorative items, and other non-biodegradable waste are discarded into water bodies or left along riverbanks during the festivities.

To tackle this, the Health Department of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has appealed to citizens to dispose of waste responsibly. The civic body has clearly instructed that no plastic or non-degradable waste should be thrown into rivers or natural water sources. Instead, specially designed bins have been placed at all immersion sites for the collection of flowers, garlands, pooja materials, and other organic waste, which must be disposed of only in these designated containers.

Deputy Commissioner of Health, Sachin Pawar, stated, “Citizen cooperation is crucial to prevent river and water source pollution. Organic offerings, when dumped directly into water, decompose and cause contamination. However, materials collected in these bins can be processed into compost or used for other eco-friendly purposes, helping ensure an environmentally responsible celebration.”

This year, under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh and Additional Commissioner Vijaykumar Khorate, PCMC has set up artificial immersion tanks at multiple locations across the city to facilitate eco-friendly immersions. Devotees have been urged to make use of these tanks and avoid polluting natural water bodies.

Additionally, citizens are being encouraged to replace thermocol and plastic decorative items with eco-friendly alternatives to further reduce environmental impact.

The civic administration has emphasized that maintaining clean riverbanks is a shared responsibility. They have called on all residents to contribute collectively towards preserving water sources and promoting a greener, healthier environment.
