In a significant move, the Indian Hotel and Restaurant Association (AHAR) has called for a statewide bandh on Monday, July 14, in protest against the steep hike in taxes imposed on the hospitality industry. As part of the strike, all permit rooms and bars across Maharashtra are set to remain closed for the day.

The bandh comes in response to the recent doubling of the Value Added Tax (VAT) on liquor, a 15% increase in license fees, and a staggering 60% rise in excise duty. According to AHAR, these sudden and excessive tax revisions have placed an enormous financial burden on small and medium-sized establishments, many of which are struggling to stay afloat.

In an official statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), AHAR said: “The hospitality industry is under severe stress due to these unfair tax hikes. This bandh is aimed at drawing attention to the crisis that could lead to widespread job losses and closure of countless businesses.”

AHAR has urged the Maharashtra government to reconsider the tax structure and adopt policies that support the sustainability of the hospitality sector. The association is also calling upon all stakeholders—restaurant owners, bar operators, and allied businesses—to participate in the bandh and unite for the future of the industry.
