In a commendable display of quick thinking and courage, the Pimpri Chinchwad Regional Transport Office (RTO) team, under the guidance of Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar, rescued an injured family after a serious accident near Lonavla on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in the early hours of Sunday. With heavy rainfall and traffic making ambulance access difficult, the RTO team ensured timely medical assistance, saving multiple lives.
The incident occurred around 12:45 am near milestone 75/22, close to the Urse Toll Plaza. Commissioner Bhimanwar was on his way to Mumbai after attending an MLA’s family function in Pune. As per protocol, RTO officers accompanied him until Lonavla when they encountered a severely damaged vehicle involved in a collision, with an injured family inside.
Savita Pawar, Motor Vehicle Inspector from Pimpri Chinchwad RTO, said, “We noticed a car with two children and three unconscious adults inside. The children were traumatised, and the adults were unresponsive. We immediately began administering first aid while also calling the emergency ‘108’ service.”

Due to the downpour and heavy traffic, emergency services were delayed. Officials were told an ambulance would take over 30 minutes to reach the spot. Without wasting time, Commissioner Bhimanwar instructed the RTO team to use their own vehicle to transport the injured to a hospital.
On the way to Pawana Multispeciality Hospital in Maval, the team met an ambulance en route and shifted a critically injured female passenger into it. The remaining victims were taken in the RTO vehicle. The team — including Inspector Savita Pawar, Assistant Inspector Vaibhav Fafale, and driver Ram Kakade — stayed with the family at the hospital until 2:30 am, ensuring they received proper care and were reunited with relatives.
The injured have been identified as resident of Pune. The victims include a 48-year-old man with multiple fractures (currently in the ICU), a 60-year-old man, a 43-year-old woman, and an 18-year-old girl who suffered head injuries but had no internal bleeding. A young boy in the car was unharmed.
The RTO team’s immediate response and golden hour treatment for preventing life-threatening complications. Commissioner Bhimanwar, though he continued his journey to Mumbai, monitored the situation closely and stayed updated on the family’s condition.
Pawar, who recently transferred to Pimpri Chinchwad from the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar RTO, added that Commissioner Bhimanwar regularly analyses accident data and emphasises rapid emergency response as a key road safety initiative — a commitment that was visibly upheld during this rescue.
