New pass aims to provide seamless travel on national highways and expressways for private vehicles starting August 15

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is all set to launch a new FASTag Annual Pass from August 15, which promises smoother and more cost-effective travel on designated National Highways (NH) and National Expressways (NE). Available only for private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans, this pass covers one year or 200 trips (whichever comes first) with no per-trip charges. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari called it a move to enhance convenience and reduce toll plaza congestion.

Here’s a detailed breakdown answering key questions about the upcoming FASTag Annual Pass:

1. Where can I get the Annual Pass?
You can activate the Annual Pass through the Rajmargyatra mobile app or the official NHAI website.

2. How is the Annual Pass activated?
Once your vehicle and existing FASTag are verified, you can pay â‚¹3,000 for the 2025-26 base year. The pass is activated on your FASTag, usually within two hours.

3. Do I need to buy a new FASTag?
No. You can use your existing FASTag, provided it’s properly installed, linked to a valid Vehicle Registration Number (VRN), and not blacklisted.

4. How long is the Annual Pass valid?
It’s valid for one year from activation or until you’ve completed 200 trips, whichever comes first. After that, it reverts to a regular FASTag, but you can reactivate it again.

5. Can I transfer the Annual Pass to another vehicle?
No. The pass is non-transferable and valid only for the registered vehicle and its FASTag.

6. What if my FASTag is registered using only a chassis number?
You’ll need to update your FASTag with a valid VRN before activating the Annual Pass.

7. What counts as a single trip?
For point-based toll plazas, each passage counts as one trip; a round trip counts as two. For closed tolling systems, one complete entry and exit pair counts as a single trip.

8. Is this mandatory? What if I don’t opt for the Annual Pass?
The Annual Pass is optional. The regular FASTag system will continue to operate, so users can stick to pay-per-use if they prefer.

With the launch date nearing, the Annual Pass could prove especially useful for daily commuters and frequent highway travellers, offering both value for money and convenient, hassle-free travel.
