PM Modi Unveils Rs 100 Coin Featuring RSS Volunteers, Bharat Mata for First Time in Independent India
Centenary celebrations of RSS marked with commemorative coin and postal stamp; Opposition raises concerns over ideological promotion
To mark the 100th anniversary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday released a Rs 100 commemorative coin and a Rs 500 postal stamp featuring RSS volunteers and Bharat Mata—a first in independent India.
The coin displays Bharat Mata in Varada Mudra, standing on a lotus with a lion by her side and holding the RSS flag, while three RSS volunteers bow in devotion. It also features the RSS motto: “Rashtray Swaha, Idam Rashtraya, Idam Na Mama” (“Everything is dedicated to the nation; nothing is mine”), with the years 1925–2025 inscribed to mark the centenary.
The accompanying postal stamp commemorates RSS volunteers participating in the 1963 Republic Day Parade and highlights their social work, carrying the motto: “Rashtra Bhakti – Seva – Anushashan” (Patriotism – Service – Discipline).
Speaking at the event, PM Modi praised the RSS for its nation-building efforts, recalling its role during India’s freedom struggle and ongoing social service. “For the first time in independent India’s history, Bharat Mata appears on our currency. This is a moment of great pride and historical significance,” he said.
The move, however, has drawn criticism from opposition parties. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and CPI(M) leaders questioned the glorification of the RSS, alleging that the release of the coin and stamp promotes an ideological agenda and constitutes a misuse of state resources. The CPI(M) described it as a “grave injury and insult” to the Constitution, citing historical opposition to the RSS.
The launch coincides with the start of RSS centenary celebrations, which traditionally begin on Vijayadashami in Nagpur.
