The Singaporean Indian community is preparing to celebrate a five-day ‘Ganeshotsav’ festival starting Saturday in an open area, marking a significant cultural Hindu event in the country. This celebration comes right after Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up his two-day visit to Singapore.

PM Modi’s official trip took place on September 4-5, 2024, marking his fifth visit to Singapore. The ‘Ganeshotsav’ is particularly special this year since it follows PM Modi’s recent departure from Singapore, where he engaged in important discussions that resulted in several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing bilateral relations. These agreements focus on cooperation in digital technologies, partnerships in the semiconductor industry, joint health and medicine initiatives, and educational and skills development collaboration.

Sachin Ganjapurkar, President of the Maharashtra Mandal in Singapore, who organized a ‘Dhol’ welcome during PM Modi’s visit, stated, “We celebrate a five-day Ganesh Utsav in Singapore. The Maharashtra Mandal has been hosting this event here for the past 30 years. Previously, we celebrated this festival in closed spaces, but this year marks the first time we will hold it in a large ‘Pandal’ (a structure in an open area). It’s worth noting that this festival is celebrated in India for ten days.”

“We bring Ganesh idols from India. These idols are eco-friendly as they are made of a special clay which dissolves soon after it comes into contact with water. A three-foot Lord Ganesha idol will be installed here in this ‘Pandal’. This year, we expect that over 25,000 people will assemble to celebrate this event,” Ganjapurkar further said.
