Pune, August 15, 2025: Municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has expressed support for developing an underground road network in the city’s central areas to address chronic traffic congestion.

On Thursday, Ram visited the Kasba Peth assembly constituency, accompanied by MLA Hemant Rasane and deputy commissioner of police Rushikesh Ravale, to review the traffic situation. He emphasised that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is working on both short- and long-term solutions, with underground roads forming a key part of the long-term plan.

“In the short term, we will focus on removing footpath encroachments and completing pending road works. Citizens will start seeing results within a year,” Ram said.

Rasane highlighted that central Pune, being a major business hub with narrow roads and heavy daily traffic, would greatly benefit from an underground road network.

The proposal has also gained political support, with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis recently backing the idea. Union minister for road transport Nitin Gadkari had planned a visit to study the feasibility but had to cancel due to traffic jams in the area.
