Pune: As the population of Pune continues to grow with the expansion of the city limits, the Pune Municipal Corporation ( PMC) is facing the challenge of demolishing its outdated water purification & treatment plant at Parvati which has been in operation for 54 years and setting up a new plant in Vadgaon to meet the demands of the residents of Pune.
PMC Commissioner Vikram Kumar stated that the old Parvati water purification plant is 54 years old. Many of its components are in ruins. The slumpwell’s slab is completely destroyed. There is a water leak from the plant.Â
The plant is running 24 hours a day for the benefit of the residents. Several structural components of the plant have decomposed and cannot be repaired.

As per further information, different sections of the water treatment plant have been in existence for the past 30 years. As a result, this outdated structure does not work effectively.
The new purification plant (500 MLD) at Parvati will gradually take over some of the work from the existing plant. The water from the old Parvati purification plant is being pumped into the Warje plant. The water from Parvati is used to supply Bibwewadi and Taljai in the area, and will soon be transferred to the new plant (Vadgaon Budruk) at Parvati.
In order to meet the growing water demand, the capacity of the 250 MLD water purification plant at Vadgaon Budruk will be increased to 277 MLD in 2032.
