In a recent meeting, the Board of Directors of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has approved the addition of 20 new double-decker electric buses to its fleet, marking a significant upgrade to the city’s public transportation system. Joint Managing Director Nitin Narvekar announced that these state-of-the-art buses are designed to enhance the convenience and comfort of Pune residents.
The proposal to acquire these double-decker buses was initially made by former PMPML president Omprakash Bakoria in December 2022. Following the board’s approval, Narvekar stated that the tender process will commence next week. However, it is anticipated that it will take approximately six months before the new buses are operational.
The new double-decker buses will feature a modern design with two staircases, unlike their predecessors which had only one. They will be electric and air-conditioned, offering a more comfortable ride. The buses will also be equipped with high-quality suspension systems and digital ticketing options, enhancing passenger experience.
Each bus will have a capacity of up to 70 passengers, with space for 40 standing commuters. Priced at ₹2 crore each, these buses stand 14 feet 4 inches tall, allowing them to navigate under metro stations without issue. Compared to the older SLF-type double-decker buses, which were costly to maintain, these new electric models promise lower upkeep expenses, with operating costs estimated at ₹6 per kilometer. In contrast, contracted buses cost ₹50-60 per kilometer to run.
The introduction of these buses is part of PMPML’s broader strategy to increase the number of electric and CNG buses in its fleet. This initiative aims to improve public transport efficiency, reduce traffic congestion, and encourage citizens to opt for public transport over personal vehicles.
Narvekar emphasized that the addition of double-decker buses is expected to further support Pune’s growing IT sector and improve overall transit efficiency in both Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. He also noted that the PMPML plans to secure financing through a bank loan and additional financial support from the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipalities and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).
The move follows the successful integration of electric buses into PMPML’s fleet in 2018, which has been well-received by commuters. The expansion to include double-decker buses is seen as a natural progression in enhancing Pune’s public transportation network.
