PMPML Urges Police Patrols To Boost Commuter Safety Across Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad And PMRDA Region

Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has officially requested Pune Police to deploy regular patrols at key bus stations and high-traffic routes across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and PMRDA areas to enhance passenger safety.

Currently, PMPML operates 381 bus routes with 20,112 daily trips, serving nearly 10 to 11 lakh commuters. While the public transport system provides affordable and reliable service, there have been increasing incidents that pose serious safety concerns for passengers.

Reported issues include:

  • Theft of valuables and wallets by unidentified individuals during travel
  • Instances of eve-teasing and use of obscene language or gestures
  • Vandalism at BRT bus stations involving obscene graffiti and drawings by anti-social elements

These incidents have particularly impacted women commuters and students, generating a strong sense of insecurity. PMPML has received several complaints in this regard.

To counter these challenges, PMPML has identified the need for regular police patrolling during peak hours (morning and evening) at the following major bus terminals:

Swargate, Deccan Stand, Dandekar Bridge, Katraj Bus Stand, Katraj Snake Park, Market Yard, Bajirao Road, Shivaji Road, Shastri Road, Ganpati Matha, Pune Municipal Corporation Stand, Pune Station, Hadapsar Depot, Dandekar Bridge (under PMC), Wagholi, Pimpri Ambedkar Chowk, Nigdi Pradhikaran, Chinchwad, and Bhosari Bus Station.

Additionally, patrolling has been recommended on the following busy bus routes:
Routes 2, 5, 24, 24A, 29, 42, 64, 98, 99, 119, 123, 139, 140, 149, 159, 161, 188, 201, 234, 235, 236, 291, 299, 298, and 301.

The directive for increased security presence has been issued by the Chairman and Managing Director of PMPML, who has communicated the request to the Commissioner of Police, Pune City. – Chief Transport Manager (Operations), PMPML, Public Relations Officer, PMPML.
