Pune: 11-Year-Old Boy Dies After Getting Stuck in Lift at Housing Society in Pimpri-Chinchwad

Child trapped between third and fourth floors for hours; fire brigade’s rescue attempt came too late
In a tragic incident on Thursday evening, an 11-year-old boy lost his life after getting trapped in a malfunctioning lift at a housing society in Chovisawadi, Pimpri-Chinchwad.
According to officials, the boy was stuck between the third and fourth floors for over three hours. A fire official said the situation was “very critical,” explaining that the boy’s legs had slipped out through the old-style iron gate of the lift while it was moving upward, leaving him fatally trapped.
Hearing the child’s screams, residents rushed to help and alerted his parents. Despite desperate attempts to pull him out, the boy remained stuck. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Fire Brigade and Disaster Management team were called in, who broke open the lift room lock, cut power supply, and used cutting tools to bring the lift down and free him.
He was immediately taken to KK Hospital, where doctors began treatment, but he was declared dead shortly after arrival.
“The boy was trapped in such a way that both his legs were on the third floor while the lift was moving upwards. By the time we cut it out and brought him down, he had suffered severe injuries,” a fire officer said.
Residents expressed grief and outrage, pointing out that the lift was of an old design with iron strip doors that pose safety risks. “He was crying for help for a long time before people realised he was stuck,” one local resident recalled.
The incident has triggered widespread shock and raised concerns over lift safety in older residential buildings. Authorities are expected to launch an investigation into whether negligence and lack of maintenance contributed to the tragedy.
