Pune: 38,000 Kondhwa Residents Left In The Dark For Hours As Heavy Rain Batters Power Supply
Pune, May 21, 2025: Heavy rains lashed Pune city and surrounding areas on Tuesday evening (May 20), causing widespread disruption to the power infrastructure. In several areas, including Kondhwa, Bhonsari, and Chakan, power supply was interrupted due to incidents like trees falling and fast-flowing water streams damaging the system.
Engineers and staff from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) worked overnight to restore power. In Kondhwa, the electricity supply resumed in phases by early Wednesday morning.
Among the worst-hit areas was Kondhwa, where rapid water flow on uneven terrain led to water seeping into 38 feeder pillars. As a safety measure, the power supply to Kondhwa, JK Park, and Kumar Palm was cut off, affecting around 38,000 residents. Once the water levels receded, MSEDCL teams began urgent repair work, including drying out flooded feeder pillars. By 6 a.m., electricity was restored gradually across the affected zones.
Across Pune, power lines and underground cables were damaged due to waterlogging and tree branches falling on electric poles. Areas like Maharshinagar, Market Yard, Premnagar, Mundhwa, Bund Garden, Fursungi, Kothrud, Shivane, Dhanori, and Dhayari faced blackouts. Similar issues disrupted power in Bhosari, Talawade, Dehu, Shelarnagar, Chikhali, Charholi, Dighi, Yamunanagar, Vitthalwadi, Rupinagar, Alandi Road, Indrayani Nagar, Chinchwad Station, Santnagar, Adarsh Nagar, Khadi Machine, and Shantinagar. Emergency repair work continued late into the night to restore power in these areas.
In rural regions like Chakan, ten electricity poles were brought down due to the downpour, affecting areas like Kuruli, Nighoje, Sara City, Nanekarwadi, Mahalunge, and Ambethan. Power was restored there gradually by early morning.
