Pune: 5 Year Old Girl Undergoes Successful Finger Replantation Surgery After Stray Dog Attack
Pune, October 6, 2025: A five-year-old girl who was severely injured after being mauled by a stray dog on 30th September was rushed to Poona Hospital with her finger completely bitten off and multiple soft tissue injuries.
Under the care of Dr. Abhishek Ghosh, renowned Microvascular and Reconstructive Surgeon, an emergency microsurgical replantation of the severed finger was performed. During the 4 hours long intricate procedure, the bones were fixed and the tiny blood vessels and nerves were reattached under a microscope, successfully restoring circulation and function to the finger. The replantation was made very difficult by the fact that it was a mangled avulsion of the finger and not a clean cut.
The additional fear of rabies compounded the risk. Concomitant anti-rabies prophylaxis was administered, including both anti-rabies antibodies and vaccine, as part of the comprehensive management protocol.
Thanks to the timely intervention and expert surgical care, the replanted finger was successfully saved, and the child is now recovering well. She is expected to be discharged soon in a stable condition.
Dr. Ghosh emphasized the importance of early presentation and specialized microvascular expertise in ensuring the success of such delicate replantation surgeries, even in the setting of animal bites.
