Family of a 9-year-old boy consented to donate his organs which helped in saving the lives of four people. Despite not being conscious, his gift of organ donation has the potential to bring hope and healing to those in need.

Aarti Gokhale, the chief transplant coordinator at the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) in Pune, mentioned that this incident marked the first cadaver organ donation at Inlaks and Budhrani Hospital. It’s a significant step towards organ donation and transplant procedures in the region.

Gokhale mentioned that there was a nine-year-old boy who was taken to the hospital on July 3 due to health issues. Unfortunately, after some time, he was declared brain-dead.

She also mentioned that they set up a green corridor with the Pune police for the smooth transportation of the organs. As the donor was a child, they conducted two necessary apnea tests with a 12-hour gap. An apnea test is performed to assess the brain stem’s respiratory center’s function under high levels of blood carbon dioxide.

The donor’s liver, pancreas, kidneys, and lungs were transplanted to five recipients in the city.

The Ruby Hall Clinic, which divided the donor’s liver between two recipients, mentioned, “We encountered a critical situation involving a 5-month-old patient with both liver and heart conditions”.The liver transplant was the last chance for the infant’s survival. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we are saddened to share that the baby succumbed to heart disease.

The adult recipient, a 47-year-old man battling decompensated chronic liver disease (DCLD), underwent a partial liver transplant and is currently in stable condition.

At Jupiter Hospital, the kidney was allocated, and Dr Suryabhan Bhalerao, a consultant in general surgery, mentioned, “The kidney was effectively transplanted into a 64-year-old man with chronic kidney disease, and the recipient is showing good recovery progress.”

Additionally, at Sahyadri Hospital, the pancreas and another kidney were transplanted into a patient, while a lung was assigned to a patient at Dr DY Patil Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre in Pimpri.

Gokhale also emphasized the importance of donating organs if they are in good condition. It’s a powerful way to give the gift of life to those in need.
