Pune Activists Demand End To Animal Captivity and Exploitation, Protest Held At Katraj ZooÂ
Pune, December 29, 2024 – Activists gathered today in front of Katraj Zoo to protest the captivity and exploitation of animals. The event, titled Face the Truth, aimed to raise awareness about the suffering of animals kept in zoos and highlight how society objectifies animals across industries.
“Animals are not here for our entertainment or profit,” said Saee Manakant, a key organizer. “Captivity strips them of their freedom, families, and natural lives, reducing them to mere objects of amusement. Zoos symbolize our flawed perception of animals as resources, not sentient beings with emotions and rights.”
The event also addressed the broader spectrum of animal exploitation, from food to fashion, entertainment, and experimentation. Activists carried placards with hard-hitting messages like “Dairy destroys motherhood” and “Fishes belong to the ocean”. Footage showcasing the brutal realities of industries like dairy and egg farming—such as calf separation and debeaking—was displayed to educate the public.

“We’ve conditioned ourselves to believe that exploiting animals is normal, but it’s not,” said Abhishek, a passionate activist. “Breeding, abusing, and killing animals for a meal, milk, or material gain is a choice—not a necessity. These sentient beings deserve respect and freedom, not lives of suffering for human pleasure.”
The activists called on the public to reconsider their actions and stop funding animal exploitation in all forms. “As we step into the New Year, let’s reflect on the impact of our choices,” Saee Manakant urged. “Let’s give animals the justice they deserve and be fair to all living beings. Animals deserve to live freely, not to be exploited for our benefit.”
