Pune, May 29, 2025: The Pune airport is set for a major infrastructure boost as the redevelopment of its old terminal building gains pace, said Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol on Monday. With the new Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) already operational, authorities have now shifted focus to enhancing the airport’s overall capacity and passenger experience.

Currently, the NITB spans 36,000 square meters. An additional 6,000 square meters will be added during the ongoing redevelopment phase. “The upgraded terminal will feature 48 check-in counters, two automated boarding gates, a new departure gate, and expanded ticketing facilities. These enhancements will allow the airport to accommodate up to 1.05 crore passengers annually,” Mohol announced.

To support the redevelopment, the central government has sanctioned ₹25 crore. Mohol confirmed that strict directives have been issued to ensure completion of the terminal work by the end of 2025.

Officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) highlighted that the project is a strategic response to rising passenger volumes and increasing demand for efficient air travel services in Pune.

In addition to terminal development, the airport’s runway expansion plans are also progressing. Mohol stated that the Obstacle Limitation Survey (OLS), a key prerequisite for extending the runway to handle larger aircraft and more international flights, has been successfully completed.

“The OLS was carried out at record speed and has delivered positive results. We are currently in discussions with the Indian Air Force to acquire land necessary for the runway expansion. The talks have been encouraging,” he added.

Mohol also expressed confidence that land acquisition for the runway extension would be completed within the next seven to eight months, paving the way for further modernization of the airport.

The expansion project is expected to significantly improve Pune’s aviation infrastructure and connectivity, enhancing both domestic and international travel capabilities.
