Incident in Kondhwa draws attention to rising frustration over EV servicing delays

Pune, 30 July 2025: A man in Pune’s Kondhwa area set his electric scooter on fire at a service centre, allegedly after repeated complaints about the vehicle’s malfunction were ignored. The incident, which occurred on July 23 at Sai Service Centre near Somji Chowk, highlights growing dissatisfaction among electric vehicle (EV) customers over delayed servicing.

According to police reports, Chirayu Chandrakant Ghone, a consultant in the used vehicle sector, had recently purchased the scooter for his father. However, soon after the purchase, the vehicle developed technical issues and stopped working. Ghone took the scooter to the service centre, where he claimed he was repeatedly given vague responses regarding the repair timeline.

On July 21, he was informed that the scooter’s motor was defective and would be replaced at no cost. But the company reportedly failed to provide a timeline for when the new motor would arrive. When Ghone returned on July 23 and received no further clarity, a heated argument broke out between him and the service staff.

He then left the premises but came back shortly afterward with a bottle of petrol, allegedly drawn from his motorcycle. He poured it over the scooter and set it on fire, destroying the vehicle completely.

Following the incident, the service centre’s manager, Jalandar Vitthal Nevse, filed a complaint at Kondhwa police station. A case has been registered against Ghone, and police say further investigation is ongoing.
