Pune Boils at 42.7°C, IMD Warns of Heat Stress, Urges Public to Stay Indoors

Pune witnessed its hottest day of the year on Tuesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reporting scorching temperatures across the city. The automatic weather station (AWS) at Lohegaon recorded a blistering 42.7°C, while Shivajinagar followed closely at 41.3°C.
According to IMD, the city is currently experiencing “hot and humid” conditions, significantly raising the risk of dehydration. Such conditions occur when daytime temperatures are at least 3°C above normal, combined with moisture in the air.
The early onset of summer has caused Pune’s day temperatures to repeatedly cross the 40°C mark, with Lohegaon emerging as the city’s hottest zone. Located within the air force station and surrounded by heavy traffic and ongoing construction, Lohegaon’s AWS has consistently logged higher-than-usual readings.
Shivajinagar, typically cooler due to its location within the agriculture college, has also started registering over 40°C – a relatively new trend. Other areas like Koregaon Park (41.4°C) and Dhamdhere (40.3°C) joined the list of localities breaching the 40°C threshold.
Most parts of Pune district recorded maximum temperatures between 37°C and 40°C. While such heat isn’t unprecedented – Pune has touched 42–43°C in the past – the frequency and early arrival of these intense temperatures have prompted fresh concerns.
IMD has reiterated its advisory urging residents to avoid stepping out in direct sunlight between 11 am and 4 pm to minimize health risks.
