Pune is in shock after a woman was allegedly raped inside a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus at Swargate depot. The accused, Dattatray Ramdas Gade (37), is on the run. Police have formed multiple teams to track him down.

Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud has called for strict punishment for the accused. He stressed that laws alone cannot prevent such crimes. “Laws for women’s safety must be properly implemented. Women should feel safe wherever they go. In such cases, there should be a proper investigation, strong action, quick trial, and punishment. The legal system and police have a big responsibility,” he said.

The opposition has compared this case to the 2012 Delhi Nirbhaya gang rape, increasing pressure on authorities.

The incident took place early Tuesday morning. The survivor, a medical professional, was waiting for a bus to Phaltan in Satara district around 5:45 am. A man approached her, calling her ‘didi’ (sister), and claimed that her bus was at another platform.

He led her to an empty ‘Shiv Shahi’ AC bus parked in a deserted area of the depot. As the lights were off, she hesitated, but he convinced her to board. He then followed her inside and raped her before fleeing.

Swargate is one of the largest MSRTC bus depots in Pune. Police are making frantic efforts to arrest the accused. Amid rising outrage, demands for swift justice continue to grow.
