Seven persons from various parts of the city are being investigated by the Alankar police for allegedly defrauding a businessman located on Dhole-Patil Road of Rs 1 crore by promising him double returns in as little as six months.

The businessman’s gym companions were the seven men, according to the police. One of them runs an import-export business. Professionals make up the remainder.

The victim and the seven men engaged in daily interactions at the gym located on Gulavani Maharaj Road, according to a senior officer of the Alankar police. They talked about ways to increase profits and various investment options. During a meeting at one of the men’s offices on DP Road in Erandwane, the seven men pushed the businessman to invest in their import and export company. In six months, they would double his returns, they said.

The officer went on to say that after the victim moved money to his friends’ accounts, they did not give him back the Rs. 1 crore that he had invested initially, nor the profit. Following several ineffective meetings to discuss how the money would be reimbursed, the victim came to them.
