Pune City Sees Surge In House Break-Ins; Rs 73.4 Crore Worth of Valuables Stolen Over 3.5 Years
Pune, July 10, 2025: Pune has witnessed a sharp rise in house burglaries over the past three and a half years, with thieves making away with valuables worth a staggering ₹73.4 crore. Despite intensified efforts by law enforcement, only 43.88% of the registered cases have been solved during this period, raising concerns about public safety.
As per police data from 2022 to June 2025, a total of 2,019 house break-ins were reported across the city. Of these, only 886 cases have been cracked so far, leading to the recovery of stolen property worth ₹13.41 crore. The remaining offenders are still at large, and much of the looted gold, silver, cash, and household valuables remain unrecovered.
In 2025 alone, up to June, 205 burglary cases have been registered, of which only 67 have been solved.
The Most Affected Area
Police Zone 5 — covering Kondhwa, Hadapsar, Bibwewadi, Wanawadi, and Undri — has emerged as the city’s most burglary-prone belt. The zone reported 822 cases in the last 3.5 years, with just 334 solved so far. The rapid suburban expansion and dense residential societies in these areas have made them prime targets for criminals.
Why the Rise in Burglaries?
According to police officials, Pune’s growing population, fueled by migration and urban sprawl, has contributed to the problem. Many residents working in IT and industrial sectors leave their homes unattended for long hours, allowing burglars to strike during the day. Reports suggest that criminals often survey closed flats and break locks before executing the thefts.
Police Advisory for Citizens
In response to the rising threat, Pune Police have urged residents to adopt preventive measures:
* Avoid keeping large amounts of valuables at home.
* Inform trusted neighbors when leaving for work or travel.
* Employ only verified security guards after police background checks.
* Install CCTV cameras at housing society entry and exit points.
* Maintain a visitor log and permit entry only after proper identification.
* Use strong, high-quality locks for doors and windows.
Authorities have also appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity. They emphasize the importance of community policing and improved residential security infrastructure to curb property crimes in Pune’s fast-growing neighborhoods.
