Pune Civic Body Launches Survey To Know Water Usage In Housing Societies

Pune To Experience Water Supply Disruption On December 26
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is taking steps to combat excessive water consumption in larger housing societies and bungalows, a growing issue highlighted by data collected from water meters installed under the city’s 24×7 equitable water supply scheme. The data shows that many societies are using up to four times the recommended amount of water, prompting the PMC to initiate a comprehensive survey with the help of the Pune-based NGO, Tahaan.
Tahaan will conduct a detailed study examining water tanks, internal distribution systems, potential leakages, and actual consumption habits in various housing societies. The survey will initially focus on societies in the Sinhagad Road and Kothrud areas. Residents will be asked to share information regarding the number of toilets, taps, sinks, and any internal water leaks within their homes through a Google form.
Dr. Neelima More, vice-president of Tahaan, stated that volunteers are gathering data on water usage patterns, which will be cross-referenced with the 24×7 water supply scheme’s records. The findings will help identify key issues like water wastage and leakages, with a final report to be submitted to the PMC for further action.
So far, 180,000 out of the planned 288,000 water meters have been installed, offering insights into water consumption trends across the city. Despite this, the PMC has not yet started billing societies based on water meter readings, focusing instead on understanding usage patterns and encouraging conservation efforts.
