Pune, July 12, 2025: In a bid to ramp up revenue collection and crack down on unauthorized property use, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has introduced monthly performance targets for its property tax inspectors. The initiative is aimed at ensuring stricter compliance and addressing the widespread misuse of residential and vacant properties for commercial purposes.

Under the new directive, inspectors will be tasked with identifying newly developed properties, tracking changes in property usage, inspecting commercialized spaces, and recovering pending dues. Surprise checks will also be conducted to monitor the performance of field staff and detect tax evasion.

The move follows a recent inspection in Baner by Additional Municipal Commissioner Prithviraj B. P. and Deputy Commissioner Avinash Sakpal, which revealed multiple instances of hotels and residential buildings illegally using vacant spaces for commercial activities, resulting in heavy revenue losses for the civic body.

“In cases where residential or vacant spaces are converted for commercial use, inspectors must impose revised taxes immediately,” Prithviraj said, adding that non-performing staff will face strict action.

To boost operational efficiency, PMC has also appointed 70 new employees for the tax department, with training to begin shortly. The civic body is further planning technological upgrades, including the integration of artificial intelligence into the property tax system and enhancements to the existing registration app for citizens and staff.

This intensified drive is part of PMC’s larger strategy to tighten enforcement and plug revenue leakages across the city.
