Pune Consumers Warned Against OTP Scams During Free LPG Safety Checks

Incidents have surfaced in Pune where gas distribution staff are requesting one-time passwords (OTPs) from consumers, citing the need to ensure the safety of items like cylinders, stoves, and rubber pipes in their homes. However, citizens are urged to verify that the employee asking for the OTP is indeed from the authorized gas distributor before sharing any information. Neglecting this step could expose individuals to potential financial fraud, making caution essential.

To enhance safety measures related to gas usage, the Central Government has instructed all gas distributors to carry out free safety checks through door-to-door visits by authorized personnel. It is crucial for residents to verify the identity of the staff before allowing them into their homes. A senior official from the gas distribution company outlined the necessary security checks:

  1. Ensure that the cylinder is upright and that the stove is positioned on a stable surface. LPG gas, being heavier than air, can accumulate near the ground in case of a leak, increasing the risk of accidents.
  2. Inspect the rubber pipe connecting the cylinder to the stove to ensure it is in good condition. These pipes typically come with a five-year warranty.
  3. Confirm that the kitchen is free of any fire or flammable materials, as a gas leak combined with an open flame could result in a fire.
  4. Make sure the regulator is from a reputable company.

After performing these checks, the employee will record the house address and take a photo of the gas cylinder using a mobile app.

LPG distributor, stated, “All safety checks are provided free of charge. When personnel arrive for the inspection, it is important to verify their credentials and confirm with the gas distributor before sharing the OTP after the inspection. In the event of a gas leak or emergency, contact the concerned gas distributor immediately by calling 1906.”

A senior officer from the gas distribution company further explained, “Previously, a fee of ₹236 was charged for security checks. Now, as part of the government’s campaign, these checks are being conducted free of charge at customers’ doorsteps. We are reaching out to consumers through SMS, WhatsApp, and phone calls to ensure the safety of as many households as possible. It is crucial for consumers to inspect their rubber gas pipes regularly; if they are damaged or expired, replacements should be purchased from authorized dealers. The market is flooded with fake rubber pipes, which pose a serious safety risk.”
