A couple drowned in a canal at Dimbhe dam near Vitthalwadi in Ambegaon taluka, about 90km from Pune, early on Saturday. The bodies were recovered by Pune rural police on Sunday afternoon and sent for post-mortem.

According to Manchar police, the woman (36) and her partner were returning to their village in Khed taluka along with her 13-year-old cousin after visiting a fair in Kadus village. Around 5 am, the couple got into a heated argument on the way back.

In a fit of rage, the woman walked towards the canal and jumped in. Her partner then handed over his wallet and cell phone to the cousin and jumped in after her, trying to save her.

Police said the cousin believed the two would return safely as they knew how to swim. But the strong water current swept them away.

“When they did not come out, the girl panicked and took shelter in a nearby farmer’s shed,” an officer said.

Police launched a search operation on Saturday morning. However, the search was difficult due to the strong flow in the canal. Authorities later asked the irrigation department to reduce the water discharge to aid rescue efforts.

The bodies were eventually found on Sunday afternoon.

Police said the woman was separated from her husband and lived with her parents. She was in a relationship with the man. The woman and her cousin had left home on Friday to attend the fair.

Police are treating the case as a tragic accident following a personal dispute.
