Pune, September 23, 2025 – In a stern action against traffic violations, the Shivajinagar Motor Vehicle Court in Pune sentenced two men to imprisonment and fines for driving under the influence of alcohol. The court’s decision serves as a strict warning to reckless drivers in the city.

In the first case, Judge S. B. Patil sentenced Rohit Shailendra Verma (29), a resident of Pimple Gurav, to 15 days of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹12,000. He was booked under sections 184, 185, and 3/181 of the Motor Vehicles Act in crime no. 4979/2024.

In the second case, the same court sentenced Rajkumar Mangini Kulal (31), a resident of Nanded City, Pune, to 15 days of simple imprisonment along with a fine of ₹10,000. He was charged under sections 184 and 185 in crime no. 01/2025.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Traffic Police Himmat Jadhav, drunk driving cases have seen a sharp rise in Pune over the years. Official records reveal 2,017 cases in 2020, 69 in 2021, 37 in 2022, 562 in 2023, 5,293 in 2024, and 3,948 cases registered so far in 2025.

Police and the judiciary have adopted a tough stance to curb the menace of drunk driving. Public Prosecutor Varsha Rani Jadhav represented the state in both cases, while Police Inspector Runal Mulla and PSI Vikas Patil supervised the proceedings.

Authorities believe such strict actions will instill fear among offenders and help reduce the rising trend of drunk driving in the city.
