Pune, October 14, 2025: Residents have been raising concerns over the increasing consumption of polythene and plastic waste by cows in the area, highlighting the urgent need for public awareness and stricter waste management practices.

According to Yashika, a 14 year old Sanskriti school student, cows often turn to roadside waste when food is scarce, consuming discarded plastic bags along with other litter. She noted a particular spot near a canal off BT Kawade Road where people frequently dispose of household and commercial waste, creating a hazardous environment for grazing animals.

“Many people don’t realize that throwing plastics carelessly can have serious consequences,” she said. “It’s not just harmful to the cows; over time, this could impact human health as well, through the food chain and contaminated resources.”

Environmentalists have long warned that ingestion of plastic can cause severe digestive issues and even death in livestock. Ingested plastic can block the stomach, lead to malnutrition, and reduce the productivity of cows. The issue is compounded by inadequate public awareness and insufficient disposal facilities, particularly in semi-urban areas where livestock freely roam.

The concerned resident urged authorities to step up efforts to curb plastic litter in grazing areas and promote alternative, eco-friendly materials. Campaigns targeting households and local businesses could help reduce plastic usage, while proper waste segregation and disposal can prevent animals from accessing harmful debris.

This growing problem highlights the interconnectedness of urban waste management, animal welfare, and public health. Without immediate action, the consequences for both livestock and the community could be severe. Experts emphasize that simple steps like avoiding polythene use and keeping streets and grazing areas clean can go a long way in protecting animals and maintaining a safer environment for all.
