PUNE: Railway heritage will take centre stage on June 1, 2025, as Pune Railway Station hosts celebrations marking the 96th anniversary of the iconic Deccan Queen and the 114th birthday of the historic Punjab Mail. The event, organised by the Railway Pravasi Group, will begin at 6:45 AM with a cake-cutting ceremony, followed by a brief function at the Deccan Queen engine at 7:00 AM.

Harsha Shah, President of the Railway Pravasi Group, has extended an open invitation to all railway enthusiasts and commuters to join the celebrations. “It is a proud moment to honour two of India’s legendary trains that have stood the test of time,” she said.

Launched in 1930, the Deccan Queen was India’s first superfast train and the first to offer a dining car. Over the years, it introduced several pioneering features — from electric haulage to vestibule design and even a dedicated women’s compartment. The train, which continues to connect Pune and Mumbai, is a symbol of innovation and elegance in Indian railway history.

The Punjab Mail, introduced in 1912 as the ‘Punjab Limited’, is one of India’s oldest long-distance trains. Connecting Mumbai to Firozpur, it has served as a vital link for over a century, carrying passengers and memories across states.

“These trains are more than just modes of transport — they are a part of our collective history,” Shah added.

The Deccan Queen is scheduled to depart at 7:15 AM after the commemorative event. Enthusiasts are encouraged to arrive early and be part of this unique celebration of Indian railway legacy.
