Pimpri-Chinchwad August 19, 2025: Traffic congestion at major junctions on the old Pune-Mumbai highway and the Mumbai-Bengaluru bypass is expected to reduce significantly, with plans underway for an elevated corridor and widened service roads.

According to the proposal, a 8.6 km elevated corridor will be built between Kiwale and Balewadi Stadium, along with widening of the service roads on both sides of the highway to 12 meters. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared, and land acquisition has already begun by the municipal corporation.

The Mumbai-Bengaluru highway passes through Pimpri-Chinchwad, where traffic bottlenecks are a frequent problem at Kiwale Mukai Chowk, Wakad Bhumkar Chowk, Punawale, Tathawade, and Dehu Road Central Chowk. To address these issues and plan for future needs, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) recently presented the project to the municipal body. Work is expected to start soon.

Around 85% of farmers have already handed over their land for the project, while compensation and encroachment removal measures are in progress.

The corridor will include a four-lane elevated road, four-lane surface road, a two-level flyover at Wakad Bhumkar Chowk, and expanded bridges over the Mula and Mutha rivers. Key underpasses will also be developed at Kiwale, Punawale, Tathawade, and Wakad.
