Pune, April 12: The State Excise Department has shown significant improvement this year in revenue generation, crime investigation, and action against license violations compared to the previous year. According to Superintendent of State Excise, Pune Division, Charansingh Rajput, a total revenue of ₹2,998.33 crore was collected in the 2024-25 financial year, marking a 9.85% increase from ₹2,729.44 crore collected in 2023-24.

In 2024-25, a total of 5,995 offences were registered in the district, resulting in the arrest of 5,891 individuals. During these actions, materials worth ₹25.8 crore, including 621 vehicles, were seized. Under Section 93 of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act, 1949, 577 proposals were submitted to magistrates against habitual offenders, and 299 good behavior bonds amounting to ₹2.18 crore were secured. Out of 9 proposals filed under MPDA, one preventive detention action was taken.

Regular and thorough inspections of licensees have led to strict action against violators. In 2024-25, 569 departmental cases were registered against licensees, with 4 licenses permanently cancelled. A total penalty of ₹1.86 crore was recovered in these cases.

Under Sections 68 and 84 of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act, 455 offences were registered against illegal liquor sellers and customers drinking at unauthorized locations, leading to the arrest of 1,250 accused. The courts imposed monetary penalties totaling ₹8.19 lakh. The department is now targeting not just illegal sellers but also those consuming alcohol at these places to curb the issue.

Under the guidance of State Excise Commissioner Dr. Rajesh Deshmukh, District Collector Jitendra Dudi, and Divisional Deputy Commissioner Sagar Dhomkar, strict actions are ongoing against illicit liquor production, transport, sale, illegal taverns, and toddy businesses. These operations are being executed by 21 task forces.
