Pune, June 14, 2025: A recent fatal accident at Gangadham Chowk has once again drawn public attention to the unchecked movement of heavy vehicles through densely populated residential areas like NIBM, Mohamadwadi, Undri, and Pisoli. Residents of these rapidly developing localities are voicing serious concerns over the increasing number of construction trucks and water tankers passing through narrow, poorly maintained internal roads.

The incident has highlighted the lack of infrastructure planning and inadequate enforcement of traffic regulations in these zones. These areas host some of Pune’s top educational institutions—14 prominent schools lie within a 5-kilometre radius, attracting thousands of students daily. Despite this, the road network remains underdeveloped and traffic management measures are insufficient.

On Saturday afternoon, a heavy truck transporting construction materials got stuck on a steep gradient near D-Mart, close to Vibgyor High School in NIBM Annexe. The mishap caused massive traffic congestion, choking the arterial road for over an hour and leaving motorists and school transport vehicles stranded.

Local residents, already dealing with daily bottlenecks and safety concerns, are now demanding immediate intervention from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pune Traffic Police. They are urging authorities to expedite long-pending road widening and repair works, strictly regulate heavy vehicle movement during school hours, and implement clear detour routes for construction trucks.

“We are not against development, but it cannot come at the cost of our children’s safety and our daily peace of mind,” said a resident.

Despite repeated complaints and several requests for infrastructure improvements, the residents claim that action on the ground has been minimal. With growing anxiety and repeated incidents, the demand for a sustainable traffic management plan is growing louder, as citizens hope for prompt and permanent solutions before more lives are endangered.
